Hello book besties!!!Today I’ll share with you my review on the last two books in the Secret Shanghai series by Chloe Gong. This series is one of my top favs ever and it’s super close to my heart ,I am also really sad that it’s come to an end.Let’s get started!!💞.
♡♡♡♡
Synopsis:
The first book in a captivating new duology following an ill-matched pair of spies posing as a married couple to investigate a series of brutal murders in 1930s Shanghai.
It’s 1931 in Shanghai, and the stage is set for a new decade of intrigue.
Four years ago, Rosalind Lang was brought back from the brink of death, but the strange experiment that saved her also stopped her from sleeping and aging—and allows her to heal from any wound. In short, Rosalind cannot die. Now, desperate for redemption from her traitorous past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country.
Code name: Fortune.
But when the Japanese Imperial Army begins its invasion march, Rosalind’s mission pivots. A series of murders is causing unrest in Shanghai, and the Japanese are under suspicion. Rosalind’s new orders are to infiltrate foreign society and identify the culprits behind the terror plot before more of her people are killed.
To reduce suspicion, however, she must pose as the wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and though Rosalind finds Orion’s cavalier attitude and playboy demeanor infuriating, she is willing to work with him for the greater good. But Orion has an agenda of his own, and Rosalind has secrets that she wants to keep buried. As they both attempt to unravel the conspiracy, the two spies soon find that there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mystery than they ever imagined.
Review
Writing: First, let’s talk about the writing. For me, third person POV in books is not my fav at all until I started reading this series.Chloe Gong’s writing style is so beautiful,it made me forget that I was reading and it immersed me so deeply it didn’t seem like it was 3rd person POV at all.Another thing I love about her writing is that she blends between Chinese history and fiction in a way that made me feel like it was all just one piece of masterfully crafted fiction.
Characters:The characters in this book are extremely well developed.Even though Rosalind wasn’t particularly my fav character in the first two books, this book made me understand her better and like her a little more. Also Celia is greatly written, she’s very brave and determined.Another character I was so happy to see in this duology was Alisa Montagova. She has grown so much to be a clever witted girl just like her brother and Juliette.
Romance & plot: The romance was really cute without overdoing it, that’s a thing I always love about Gong’s books. But my fav fav couple will always be Roma & Juliette. As for the plot, it was perfect. The plot twists ,the sequence of events and everything was immaculate. And for the series finale in Foul Heart Huntsmen I would describe it in three words: happy, sad, and satisfying. The happy part is because the ending is happy and I loved it. The sad part is because I am so sad to leave the characters behind and satisfying because we got a perfect ending to this world.
Overall Foul Lady Fortune and Foul Heart Huntsman are worth reading, in fact you should read the whole series and trust me, you’ll love it!
Have you girlies read this series? If you have how much did you rate it? And if you haven’t, will you add it to your TBR??
Happy Reading <3
